L02 task 3, Audience
Introduction
Hello my name is Shayi Aluwoade, and for this task I have been asked to analyse the age and gender of the target audience.
Ien Eng and john Harley discussed that producers create invisible fiction or imaginary entities before creating a media product, as this helps them research and find their target audience.
The target audience of my film is mainly teenagers, ranging from 18 and upwards in my opinion.
Gender
There are many examples in my film connotes why the target audience gender is male as the film is based on the story of hip hop legend Biggie smalls and hip hop stereotypically disregards women in some aspects which connotes to Laura Mulvey's point in 1975 about the "male gaze" which denotes how women are regarded as "sexual objects" The main character is also a male which connotes the male age dominance in this film and also he is an ideal self in many aspects as he could be a male role model to many of my target audiences as many males are interested in hip hop and also in the more poorer areas, they can relate to the struggle the artist is living which connotes the social realism, and he happens to be a role model to the male gender as the male gender is mainly interested in this genre of music being 90's hip hop.
An example which denotes that the dominant gender is male is linking back to the point I made about Laura Mulvey's "male gaze theory" which links to the film as women are seen in many aspects as sexual objects as in scenes throughout the film he refers to women as "bitches" and to a female viewer they could see this as negatively depicting women in many aspects, again connoting why the male gender is dominant throughout this film.
The film is has many scenes which involve drug dealing, shooting etc. which is typically associated with males as the typical stereotype is boys like guns etc. and of course drug dealing is not often associated with females, which again shows male gender dominance throughout the film which connotes that he male gender would be interested in watching a film reflecting this lifestyle.
Another example of male dominance which links back to my earlier point about males being a lot more interested in hip hop, is the actual lyrical content in Biggie's music.
Age
There are many examples of why my film represents the median age of the target audience which in my opinion is around 18, One example which connotes this is the language used throughout the film, as their is a lot of explicit language, which would not be a good example to teenagers and kids under 18 as for example, Biggie uses language which dis respects women and this would be a very bad example for the younger generation who may take he actions in the movie for real linking to the hypodermic syringe theory as it may influence them to commit domestic violence.
Another example of why the film represents the median age is the fact of the illegal drug use and even things like alcohol used throughout the film which would not be appropriate for teenagers under 18 I would say as the lifestyle that is denoted is damaging to health, and things like drug abuse at a young age could ruin say a child's future so that is why I think the film reflects the median age of around 18.
Their is also a lot of violence throughout the film, including gun violence, fist fights in some scenes which again connotes why this film reflects the median age as gun violence etc. are a bad thing for younger kids to be seeing which could again link to the hypodermic syringe theory as it could influence say a young child in a poorer area to start committing similar crimes to Biggie which would of course lead to them being put in jail or maybe even killed as a lot of the actions connoted throughout the film are illegal activities and therefore the film would not be recommended to teenagers and children below the median age.
Lifestyle
The NRS are the national research survey ltd, which is an organization specialising in demographic information, who use a range of summary headings as an alternative way of classifying lifestyle types. For my film I would say it connotes that the lifestyle categories are urban ventures, have-nots and unclassifiable, I have chosen these lifestyle types as for example urban ventures would be interested in this film as they are into hip-hip music etc. As it is arguably the biggest genre in the world today so therefore this connotes that urban ventures would be interested in this film and genre as they would mostly be 18 years + in age and this therefore connotes that they would be interested in the hip-hop lifestyle e.g. drinking, smoking and the instrumentals the actual music of the film gives off, as urban ventures would be interested into partying and the music is aggressive, hyped up etc. So therefore would match the urban ventures lifestyle in some aspects as this is links to the city life, as the location most urban ventures live in. The lifestyle of the protagonist, and surrounding characters could also influence urban ventures to buy similar clothes/shoes to what are connoted in the movie, as the film could effect their lifestyle, and also the films message in general about how somebody who came from poverty, got in the studio and made it into one of the biggest hip-hop stars in the world, as this in general could inspire an urban venture, to start booking studio sessions and start rehearsing lyrics etc.
However the lifestyle of the film also relates to have-nots and the unclassifiable, as it is something they can relate to as in the film, Biggie came from nothing, most likely from a similar environment e.g. low income, bad area, and still happened to make it out successfully with a very high paying job, being a music artists which connotes to them anything is possible and could therefore inspire them, which shows social realism as the film reflects the hard struggle of growing up in a low income environment.
Spending power
The spending power for my audience varies as for example, urban ventures are most likely middle class, as they are teenagers living in the city so therefore most likely go to university, and therefore have the luxury to most likely see the film in the cinema, and maybe buy it on dvd after as this is a thing common among teenagers, going to the cinema, watching movies with each other etc.
However the other lifestyle categories I chose, connote a different spending power as for example have-nots, and unclassifiable are most likely working class , so therefore may they not be able to afford to go to the cinema or buy the dvd, so due to not being not able to afford these luxuries they may have to watch the film in groups, at each others house for example. Based on their spending power, the audience could afford to do things based on their hobbies, for example going to the studio to record music, and also spending money on for example, Hip-hop related clothes. This would again be more affordable for middle class teenagers, opposed to the working class, as these can of course afford to pursue these luxuries. The NRS demographic of the middle class audience would be B, whereas the more working class audience would be D.
